These three Neanderthal sites in the Dordogne are listed together because you buy tickets for all of them at the Font de Gaume ticket office. Le Moustier is actually two rock shelters where Neanderthal remains were found in the early 1900's. An infant skeleton found here is on display at the National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies. The skeletons are about 40,000 years old. A guided tour in French is offered on Thursdays at 10 am.
La Micoque is an open air site that was discovered by a farmer in 1895, after flint tools had been plowed up on his property. The site has yielded tools that range in age from 150,000 to 400,000 years. Guided tours in French are given on Tuesdays at 2:30 pm.
La Ferrassie is a cave and rock shelter that was home to Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons. Eight Neanderthal skeletons have been found here, along with tools and artwork made by humans. French tours are given on Thursdays at 2:30 pm, and English tours on Mondays at 2:30 pm.
